PTV Chairperson Atta ul Haq Qasmi self-appoints himself as Managing Director

Pakistan Television (PTV) Chairperson Atta ul Haq Qasmi has self-appointed himself as the Managing Director of the channel. Recently, he called the board of directors where he passed a resolution, without any consent, declaring himself as the new MD. Taking this step, Qasmi was already the oldest chairperson in the history of PTV management, appointed through PML-N prejudice.

This news was revealed by Senator Farhatullah Babar during a meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Information, Broadcasting, and National Heritage. The member of the committee, after hearing the news were extremely shocked, have termed it as illegal.

Mohammad Malik, the former MD of PTV, retired from his position on 28th February last year. Though some candidates from the Information Ministry held this position, it has been vacant since then.

Senator Farhatullah Babar, on the recent MD breakthrough, said:

“It has come to our knowledge, about 10 days ago, that Qasmi called a meeting of the PTV’s BoD in which a resolution was passed to formally appoint himself as MD of the state-run television channel and it was signed by the board members.”

On the other hand, Kamil Ali Agha, committee’s chairperson had no idea that such an event has happened and reshuffling of staffers is in progress without the consent of concerned departments.

Maryam Aurangzeb, Minister for Information, and the Ministry’s Secretary, Sardar Ahmed Nawaz Sukhera, were grilled by the senators on such high-level ignorance.

Ms. Aurangzeb was aware of the development, however, she let it happen without any confrontation. Senator Babar has inquired Maryam Aurangzeb to clarify their stance, as the action has been deemed illegal.
