After channels go on air, social media sites resume across the country

As PEMRA was directed to lift ban over airing of all news channels across the country, social media sites including Facebook, Twitter and YouTube have also been unblocked by PTA. After remaining inaccessible for over 24 hours following the government’s crackdown on the Faizabad protesters a day earlier, the government has lifted their ban and blockage over all media platforms.

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has restored all social media websites, including Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube after a notification was put to effect and issued on Sunday evening. A spokesman of Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) said that the instructions had been received to unblock the websites.

Hours after police and paramilitary forces launched a crackdown on protesters on Saturday, PTA was ordered to block and ban all TV news channels, leading social media networking sites (Facebook, Twitter & Instagram) and video-sharing websites (YouTube and Dailymotion).
