Tehsil Municipal Administration Bannu, KPK has come under fire for its latest advertisement seeking sweepers. Though advertising for sweepers is nothing wrong, but it mentions that only Shias, Christians, Balmikis, and Hindus will be eligible. Now did you sense what’s wrong with the ad?
The advertisement mentions that the district administration is looking to hire 14 sweepers on scale number 2; Teshil Nazim and Tehsil Municipal Officer, belonging to Jamiat Ulema e Islam-Fazl (JUI-F), directed to a local newspaper.
Under the column mentioned particularly for religion, the advertisement mentions that applicants should belong to Christian and Hindu religions or Shia sect.
Here is an image of the cutout of the advertisement:
The advertisement in question became a serious target of criticism, indicating that promotes religious imbalance and sectarian hatred around the country.
However, later the same newspaper issued an apology stating:
“The word ‘Shia’ was mistakenly typed instead of ‘bashamool’, which was a typing error by the clerk in TMA Bannu office.”
Even if the newspaper did not mean to write Shia, is it just to rule out and point specific religions for the jobs that are registered as dismal and looked down upon in this society. It is wrong to dishonour these jobs at the first place, but looking for people who do not belonging to the same religion is even more discouraging.
