In a country where female mobility is a major hurdle towards empowerment and gender equality, it is difficult to produce a general acceptance towards women working.

Rafia Qaseem Baig at 29, she is on her way to becoming Pakistan’s first female bomb disposal officer. She is said to be the first female member of the Bomb Disposal Squad in Pakistan. She is part of the Peshawar police force and has been involved in some very intricate operations.

She is the only woman among 31 police officials selected for an elementary course, the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD), in Nowshera — a programme centred on handling and defusing explosives.

Rafia talks about the criticism that she heard from people when she decided to join the police force as it was a lower grade position. She claims that if the work you do is done right then it doesn’t matter what grade officer you are and she has certainly proved it.

Her bravery proves that women are just as brave as their male counterparts and are playing their part in protecting and serving their country.
