In a startling revelation, National Bank of Pakistan has been alleged of illegally collecting Rs. 400 million on passport fee. The bank had been taking extra service charges of Rs. 23 per passport. The corruption was unveiled by the Ministry of Interior during a Public Accounts Committee (PAC) on Tuesday, 21-12-2016.
Secretary Interior has informed the official committee of government that National Bank of Pakistan was taking additional Rs. 23 as servicing charges on every passport. It further alarmed the authorities that such charges were extraneous and weren’t approved officially by the government. After a detailed calculation of fraud money collected, audit officials claimed that Rs. 400 million was taken unlawfully by the NBP authorities.
On the other hand, Chairman Committee has stated that the government bank should not collect superfluous charges from the passport service seekers. Furthermore, he rebuked the concerned authorities and said that the purpose of government should be to facilitate people and not to loot money from them, adding that the ministry should instantly visit the bank for inspection.
Chairman also recommended that the private commercial banks should be allowed honest dealings of the passport procedure too.
Director General Passport ended the meeting by alarming the committee that Rs. 22 billion were made through issuance of 4.5 million passports, this year.
